Brave's Story

Brave grew up timid.

His arms were too small to lift a heavy sword, and he was always so skinny and small that the wind seemed to be able to blow him over.

But his name was Brave.

His people were known for their bravery. Rumour had it that his ancestors were once twin princes who joined forces to slay a distant dragon with a single sword. Therefore, Brave had grown up without many people wanting to talk to him, except for an old man in the corner of the village.

The old man was old enough that everyone had to respect him, having been a locksmith in his youth, but in his old age his hands shook so much that his eyes could not see clearly anymore and he simply closed them. In the words of the old man, there are some things that are clearer without eyes.

The name Brave was given to the little boy by the old man. Many people later laughed at it - Brave had shown himself to be a coward, and the old man was really old-fashioned. But despite this, the old man and Brave had a good relationship, and Brave loved to listen to the old man's many strange and unusual stories, The Illusionist Who Could Create Everything; The Man Who Mended The Moon; The Story of Death, and all sorts of things.

Brave also wondered why the old man had given him that name. He was not brave at all; he was weak. He could not lift huge stones with one hand like Reckless - also named by the old man - who was in his class and dared to go face to face with tigers and black bears. The old man always shook his head and told him that Reckless was not brave at all. Whenever this was said, the old man would always say that really brave people start out as cowards, and that the first step to being brave is to learn to be afraid.

As the days went by, Reckless grew to be the strongest man in the village, and everyone got used to the fact that Brave was not brave. Brave grew more refined and wiser. He loved everyone around him, and everyone grew to love this young man; his timidity was just a flaw.

After a long time, a huge Cyclops cried out outside the village, threatening to destroy the whole village to vent his anger as the owner of the dragon killed by the village's ancestors. Reckless and the others put on their amour and wielded their swords, but when they rushed forward, they were knocked down with just one roar from the giant.

Nevertheless, they rose up again and again, despite knowing that they could not defeat the giant.

The giant laughed loudly at the crowd's antics when a thin figure blocked his way before him. He froze for a moment and then let out an even more startling laugh. The Cyclops bellowed, "You want to stop me, Boy?

It was Brave who stood in front of him.

Brave was trembling and in his hand was a lock. It had been given to him by the old man, who said that it would lock inside the power of the giant, but that he was old and no longer so agile, so he entrusted it to Brave and showed him the way to put it on.

But Brave was terrified to death. and there was not a part of his body that did not tremble. The giant roared:” I can hold you down with just one thumb!” When he heard this, Brave almost knelt down and begged for mercy, but he didn't. He was so scared that he would have lost the strength to stand, but he knew that the lives of the whole village were in his hands. He was scared to death, but he had to face it because he loved this place.

At this point, Brave suddenly understood what the old man meant by bravery - a man is only truly brave when he has learned to fear and then has a reason to overcome it. Of course, he realized it, and he suddenly felt immensely strong but also as light as a swallow, easily dodging the giant's swinging fist and then planting the lock on the giant's body.

The old man had been right from the start; Brave was not only the only person in this village who had grasped the true meaning of bravery, but it was he who was the greatest warrior of all. Only the old man used the lock to keep these powers locked up; courage was the key. He was very proud of it, just as he had been in his youth.
